This fragrance startup turns a 3-minute conversation about a memory into a custom perfume

Index says its AI machine maps the emotions and physical details in a client's story onto nine scent bases, then dispenses the blend on the spot.

Index, a fragrance house founded in 2025, built a robotic machine that interviews clients about a personal memory and turns their answers into a custom perfume dispensed on the spot, according to Dazed Beauty. Co-founder Tigris Li says the AI-guided conversation lasts about three to five minutes, during which the machine asks questions to surface specific people, places and sounds from the memory.

Li says the system runs two stages of analysis: first identifying the story's narrative structure and the ratio of emotions detected, then mapping the physical details, like a setting near the seaside, onto matching scent elements such as sea breeze or driftwood. The machine draws from nine fragrance bases formulated by Index's other co-founder and in-house perfumer, Isabella Smith, visible through tubing inside the device before the final blend is dispensed into a 6ml glass bottle.

In one example, a conversation about sorting through a grandmother's old Avon products and the smell of her morning porridge and Chanel N°5 produced a custom scent named after her, blending milky black tea, cedar, soft musk, "warm skin," amber, yuzu, cream soda, peaches and jasmine. "We're translating something abstract into a physical product that you can wear," Li said.
