Netflix's "East of Eden" follows Florence Pugh's character Cathy Ames from just after the Civil War into the 1910s, and co-hair and makeup designers Nancy Hennah and Sarah Rubano used that 43-year span to shift Pugh's look in step with how cosmetics actually reached the market, according to Allure. "Our beauty vision changed with the characters and with what was in fashion during each time period," Hennah said.
Early in the series, set in the 1860s, makeup artist Heba Thorisdottir kept Pugh's look minimal since cosmetics weren't yet widely manufactured or sold. As Cathy later reinvents herself as a brothel owner named Kate, Thorisdottir layered in more makeup to mirror both the character's arc and the cosmetics industry's growing commercial reach by that point in the timeline. Pugh's personal hairstylist, Jaime Leigh McIntosh, also avoided hot styling tools on her wigs throughout, opting to wet-set the hair for texture instead.
