Elemis Facial Pads Pair Enzymes With Lactic Acid for At-Home Exfoliation

Dermatologists say the combination can smooth skin without relying on a single strong acid, though they caution against overdoing it.

The Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads, winner of a 2026 Allure Best of Beauty Award, combine the brand's patented tri-enzyme blend (papain, protease and subtilisin) with lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, according to Allure. Dermatologist Farhaad Riyaz, MD, says enzymes break down the proteins holding dead skin cells together while lactic acid uses its acidity to loosen those same bonds, and combining the two "could give you smoother skin with less reliance on a strong acid."

Dermatologist Chang Son, MD, says lactic acid is gentler than glycolic acid because its larger molecules penetrate skin more slowly, while dermatologist Dawn Queen, MD, notes it also acts as a humectant that helps support hydration during exfoliation. The pads also contain glycerin, betaine, butylene glycol, shea butter and fatty alcohols for moisture, plus a postbiotic ingredient, Lactococcus ferment lysate, that Dr. Queen says is still a "supporting player" with research on its benefits still emerging. The formula contains added fragrance.

Elemis recommends using one pad morning and night from the standard 60-count tub, which would last about a month at that pace; Allure's reviewer started with once a day given her sensitive, dry skin. Dr. Queen says regular exfoliation "can absolutely help fade existing hyperpigmentation" from breakouts or sun exposure, but cautioned that melasma is harder to treat through exfoliation alone because its pigment can sit at different depths in the skin.
